WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wednesday is the deadline to sign up for the Affordable Care Act if you want your coverage to start Jan. 1, but you still have other options.

Wills Maxwell, a market certified browser, says the open registration period lasts until January 15. This means that if you enroll after December 15, your coverage will start on February 1 instead of January 1.

If you’re worried about a month-long coverage gap, you can log on to healthcare.gov to sign up for a plan before midnight. However, Maxwell recommends contacting browsers like him for free help finding a plan that’s right for you.

“We can help you, answer questions. Once it’s time to select a plan, we’re the ones who will know the differences between each of the plans and providers,” Maxwell said. “We have no loyalty to a certain provider, we don’t sell insurance, we don’t work for any of the healthcare providers. Our interest is to offer you the best possible plan.

Maxwell and his Legal Aid NC team will be at various locations in the Cape Fear area for the remainder of the open enrollment period to help people get the coverage they need.
