Some of the biggest and most daring shows ever in Hamilton – all taking place next year at the Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival 2022: February 18-27.
With Hamilton’s Magic Gardens as its main venue, HGAF is an arts festival with a difference. Our 100% Aotearoa program features the best of Waikato performing artists alongside some of the most compelling performers and shows from across the country.
According to festival director Geoff Turkington, the program touches on themes of a celebration of life, humor, humanity, and what makes the Kiwi so special.

Comprising everything from classical music to drag, from ballet to theater, from comedy to children’s shows, our 2022 festival schedule is packed with world-class artistic experiences.
Join a star group of Kiwi music icons as they rock’n roll through The
Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs soundtracks by Tarantino. Performed in concert – with Tami Neilson, Laughton Kora, Milan Borich and Booga Beazley, backed by the phenomenal Big Band Royale.
YOLO’s house is the celebration of a show, packed with extraordinary circus talent and couture chaos. A true feast for the senses, this multidisciplinary show from The Dust Palace (PULP, Top of the stack) explores the modern slavery of the fast fashion middle class.
Theater-goers are spoiled for choice with five solo theatrical works exploring a wide range of subjects including conservation, the joys of reading, satire, and the history of Aotearoa.
Our musical program features a diverse mix of musical styles including flamenco, soul, folk, percussion and classical.
Experience the live performance of Northland soul sensation TEEKS with the support of rising star Raglan Muroki.
Also on the lawn of the Rhododendron – the haunting Reb Fountain will preview its highly anticipated new album Iris alongside fan favorites from her self-titled Taite award-winning album, and the Auckland Jazz Orchestra team up with fabulous Caitlin Smith for an evening of big band jazz!
Poetry and music lovers can join some of the country’s best and brightest songwriters, including Anna Coddington, Lawrence Arabia and Julia Deans, as they perform original music inspired by the poems of iconic writer Katherine. Mansfield. Mansfield in Her Own Words: Unplugged is an intimate coupling of poetry and music set in charming Mansfield Garden.
There will also be a world class local ballet! Contemporary but elegant, Black ballet is the ballet seen through the elegant and cryptic lens of film noir.

COMMUNITY-CENTERED AND FREE!
With community at its heart, HGAF has a strong focus on free shows that provide a platform for local artists to showcase their mahi and for audiences to engage with emerging artists and musicians. The 2022 program has offered the most comprehensive free and live program in many years, ensuring that the festival is accessible to everyone.
The Grassroots Trust Festival Hub is at the heart of the action right in the center of Hamilton Gardens, with free, live entertainment celebrating local artists and musicians starting at 5 p.m. nightly. Surrounded by food trucks and a bar, this is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the festival vibe whether you’re there to see a show or not.
It’s Kiwi – Indigo Festival is a mini festival within a festival – a celebration of how lucky we are to experience in Aotearoa. This special free event brings together the many diverse cultural groups that make up our beautiful community, with over 20 different shows taking place in different gardens.
Nothing says summer in Kirikiriroa as the city’s most beloved free event,
Sunset Symphony. For more than 10 years, Sunset Symphony brought Hamilton together to celebrate the best things in life… glorious orchestral music, whanau, friends, food and fireworks! All in the breathtaking setting of a sunset over the rhododendron lawn.
HGAF’22 also extends beyond Hamilton Gardens and into the CBD with free events focused on live music, discussions and live art taking place in Victoria on the River over two Saturdays (19 and February 26).
